Pediatric osteopathy is a specialized area of osteopathy that focuses on children, from newborns up into the early teenage years.
A common question we hear from our patients is if we are able to possibly help their children. The answer is yes. Osteopathy can definitely help with issues that arise in infancy or childhood. Some people are surprised to hear that babies or young children would need a manual treatment like Osteopathy, but factors such as the stress of childbirth, rapid changes to the body as children grow and accidents and falls along the way, can all lead to restrictions and cause lack of mobility in the body which should be addressed right away. If these issues are not addressed, they could eventually lead to increased irritability, colic, sleep issues, discomfort and pain.
We recommend that parents of young infants bring their children in for a treatment if they notice any specific issues arise or if things just "don't feel right" for some reason. For older children, if your child complains of pain or any persistent issue they should also be checked by a osteopathic practitioner with advanced pediatric training.
It's important to understand that osteopathic practitioners aim to treat the root cause of the problem and don't treat symptoms or diagnose any conditions. We work to release tensions within the body with the goal of freeing the nervous, circulatory and lymphatic systems to promote healthy body function. Treatments are always gentle making osteopathy an ideal approach for babies and children.
At Functional Osteopathy, we offer specialized osteopathic services for babies and children in Victoria and the lower Island. Our highly trained professionals will assess any issues your child has been having, and can perform gentle techniques to help them feel well again.

Pediatric osteopathy is much like osteopathy for adults except its slighty adapted for babies and children using a softer and even more gentle approach.
During the first appointment, a small amount of time will be spent talking about your childs main complaint, some general health questions and your child's birth story. The session will also include an assessment of your child's body to find the areas that need some osteopathic assistance. Next, your child will get hands-on treatment for the reminder of the session.
Follow-ups include a quick check-in at the beginning and hands-on manual therapy for the rest of session.
The birth process can be stressful for both mom and baby. A check-up with an osteopathic practitioner is always be a good idea to prevent any restrictions in the body. Osteopathy can be helpful for many issues that can arise in a baby including and not limited to: acid reflux, colic, plagiocephaly (flat spot on the head), troubles sleeping, torticollis, difficulty latching.
Not at all. Osteopathy is very gentle and the approach is great for children of all ages and stages.
